"The Payroll department not only deal with the on-going payroll processing of the Appleby Westward staff," (says Clare Parkin, Appleby Westward's Payroll Co-ordinator) they also work with a large number of our retailers who outsource their payroll to Appleby Westward'.
Weymouth store owners Mike and Barbara Clements have been celebrating the 25th anniversary of running their convenience store – the last 10 of which have been with SPAR.
And to mark the occasion, they staged a special open day at the Preston Road store and invited customers, friends and family to join in their celebrations. Many customers sent Mike and Barbara congratulations cards and one even baked them a celebration cake.
The store has always been at the heart of the local community. “From the very beginning, we have always tried to play an active role serving the community, support schools and charities in the town and listen to the needs of our customers,” said Mike.
He and Barbara have not been afraid to develop their business since they first took over the independent 400 sq.ft. shop in 1986, when it was known as Bailey’s. Barbara had been working in retail and Michael was a Metropolitan police officer, but they wanted their own business and took two years before finding the little shop in Weymouth.
The move to SPAR ten years ago was a turning point for the store. “We looked at all the other symbol groups but it had to be SPAR,” said Barbara. “Everyone knows SPAR, we’re in a holiday area and foreign visitors all know the brand because it is so international.”
Mike and Barbara have carried out several refurbishments to the store over the years, supported by SPAR’s regional distribution company Appleby Westward, and today it is a 1,100 sq.ft. neighbourhood value store with a growing trade. They have developed a strong food-to-go business, and regularly run in-store promotions to help them fight competition from other stores nearby. The store also features a combi Post Office, a wide range of chilled products, wines, beers and spirits, fresh local meat and other local produce.
At the celebration day, there were tastings for SPAR’s new West Country brand range of products which include cheese, pork sausages, saffron cake, clotted cream, bottled water, butter and Westward Gold Ale. Other local suppliers attended to give tastings of their products. The event also included face painting and colouring competitions, and was followed by a Halloween treasure hunt for children with money raised going to the NSPCC.
