Appleby Westward is introducing West Country Cider to its popular own-brand range of products.
The company introduced its West Country own label brand nearly a year ago and West Country Cider, produced in Cornwall, is the latest addition to the range.
West Country Cider is made from locally-grown apples at the award-winning Polgoon vineyard and orchard near Penzance run by John and Kim Coulson.
The couple, formerly Newlyn fish merchants, renovated a rundown farm and outbuildings six years ago and created a flourishing vineyard and orchard producing Cornish wines, champagnes and ciders, along with an on-site shop filled with other products including jams, honey, chutney, eggs and fudge.
John and Kim have enjoyed considerable success since they began production, winning a trophy from the UK Vintners Association for the best Still Rose Wine in the country from their first wine harvest in 2006. They were voted Cornwall’s Best Drinks Producer in 2008 and 2010 and have won a host of other awards for their wide range of drinks products.
Polgoon’s Cornish Black, Cornish Pink and Cornish Cider were all winners of a Silver Award at the 2011 Taste of the West Awards. The SPAR West Country Cider is made from Cornish apples which are pressed and then slowly fermented to produce a light and refreshing cider.
SPAR’s West Country range of regional products is grouped under a distinctive, eye-catching logo. Soup, cheese, milk, clotted cream, eggs, meat, spring water, saffron cakes and buns, along with locally produced fruit and vegetables are already being marketed under the West Country banner. Appleby Westward will also shortly be re-launching Westward Gold, a full-bodied pale ale in 500ml bottles, produced by St. Austell Brewery.
“SPAR customers hold local products in high regard, and our West Country brand reinforces our commitment to using local suppliers to provide customers with the best products that our region has to offer,” said Appleby Westward’s Head of Marketing, Nick Vivian. “SPAR West Country gives our regional products their own identity that is unique to us.”
