HOSPICE BENEFITS FROM BARN DANCE PROCEEDS

Store Owners Raise Funds for Local Charity

A barn dance held at the St. John’s Church Hall, Shiphay has raised £1,697.50 for the Rowcroft Hospice in Torbay.

Over 120 people attended the dance, organised by SPAR store owners Chris and Natalie Herring, and money was raised through tickets on the door, a number of raffles, the bar and donation boxes.

Pictured at the presentation of the cheque are, from left, Hayley Norrish, community fundraising assistant for Rowcroft Hospice, Chris Herring, Kevin Stiff, regional sales manager for Appleby Westward, and Natalie Herring.

Rowcroft Hospice provides specialist care to people in Torbay and South Devon with life-limiting illnesses. It was founded 30 years ago and has expanded with the help of the local community, providing care to over 1,000 people every year. Although the NHS funds 23% of the running costs, the Hospice depends heavily on voluntary contributions.

The Herring family run four SPAR convenience stores in the area. They have operated the SPAR store and post office in Cadewell Lane, Shiphay since 1980, subsequently acquiring three additional SPAR stores in the area, two in Old Mill Road, Chelston and another in Castle Circus in the centre of Torquay.
