"The Payroll department not only deal with the on-going payroll processing of the Appleby Westward staff," (says Clare Parkin, Appleby Westward's Payroll Co-ordinator) they also work with a large number of our retailers who outsource their payroll to Appleby Westward'.
Two south west SPAR stores have won recognition for their local community work in an award scheme run by the Federation of Wholesale Distributors.
Mark and Veronica Talbot, who run the SPAR store in Long Sutton near Langport, and Mike and Barbara Clements who have a SPAR in Weymouth, have both received awards from their local MP’s.
The My Shop Is Your Shop campaign seeks to recognise local shops with a track record in local community involvement, and one winning store represents every parliamentary constituency in the UK.
The Long Sutton store won a Countryside Alliance Award for the best store in the south west in 2007, and Mark and Veronica have run the store for the last nine years. Mark said: “We are delighted to have won this community award for the Frome and Somerton constituency and always try to look after the needs of our local community.”
In Weymouth, Mike and Barbara, who celebrated their 25th anniversary in the Preston Road store last year, are renowned for their role at the centre of the community. Mike said: “From the very beginning, we have always tried to play an active role serving the community, supporting schools and charities in the town and listening to the needs of our customers.”
The My Shop Is Your Shop campaign recognises the special relationship independent retailers have with their customers and the extra efforts they make to contribute to their neighbourhood, whether through support for local groups, charity work, or simply great service, a pleasant shopping environment and a tailored product range.
By asking MPs to present the awards, parliamentarians get an insight into the invaluable service provided in communities by local retailers. David Visick, Director of Communications at the Federation of Wholesale Distributors, said: “A good relationship with your MP is a massive bonus for an independent store, and in many of the presentations we made last year, the MP was able to give support and advice which was of immediate help to the retailer. By demonstrating what a great job local stores do in their constituencies, we have been able to enlist MPs in our efforts in Westminster to establish a fair and level playing field for the independent sector.”
