"The Payroll department not only deal with the on-going payroll processing of the Appleby Westward staff," (says Jo Hounsell, Appleby Westward's HR Director) they also work with a large number of our retailers who outsource their payroll to Appleby Westward'.
The Hunnyhill Stores Group has opened its 14th SPAR store on the Isle of Wight, creating 10 new full and part-time jobs, following a major co-investment scheme with Appleby Westward.
The new store in Gunville Road, Carisbrooke, Newport, is the result of a £250,000 redevelopment of an empty carpet warehouse, creating a 3,000 sq.ft. community SPAR supermarket.
Last year, the company opened two other new stores in Newport and Ventnor, and the latest development represents Hunnyhill’s 14th SPAR on the island since it opened its first store in Newport 12 years ago.
John Perrett, Hunnyhill’s Managing Director, said: “Our new supermarket at Carisbrooke is our 5th store in the Newport area and the large size of the store reflects the way we think the convenience market is going. We opened one of a similar size in Victoria Street, Lower Ventnor last year.”
The company, which John runs with his wife Jean, daughter Amanda and son-in-law John Ward, operates other SPAR stores on the island in East Cowes, Lake, Ryde, Sandown, Ventnor, Wootton and Wroxall.
John said: “The business has grown significantly since we opened our first store in 2000 and we now employ 130 people in our stores on the island. In that time, we have provided a significant boost to the SPAR brand on the Isle of Wight.”
Ben Woodford has been appointed manager of the new Carisbrooke store, which opens from 7.00am-10.30pm every day. The store features a hot food-to-go area, including a pizza-making operation, along with a Costa Coffee service, as well as a wide range of frozen, chilled and fresh foods, groceries, off licence, newspapers and magazines. SPAR’s Real Deal
promotions feature strongly throughout the store. “Customers like our deals, which is important as it shows them value,” said John.
“As we grow our business, so we can get better prices and pass the savings on to our customers. We never forget our customers have a choice and we are determined to offer great customer service and great prices. Our growth on the island has come about by remembering our roots in the community and striving to exceed customer expectations.”
