"The Payroll department not only deal with the on-going payroll processing of the Appleby Westward staff," (says Clare Parkin, Appleby Westward's Payroll Co-ordinator) they also work with a large number of our retailers who outsource their payroll to Appleby Westward'.
The Appleby Westward tradeshow is the premier retail convenience show in the south west, and attracted its highest level of supplier support for five years.
The show also enjoyed great support from retailers, with 72% of SPAR stores in the south west represented. It also attracted nearly 20 prospective SPAR retailers, who heard how symbol groups were enjoying the fastest growth in an expanding convenience market.
With the theme of the day being “A Fresh Start For Growth”, retailers were urged by the keynote speakers to seize the big sales opportunities offered by fresh foods in their stores, and a number of promotional initiatives supporting this were outlined.
The audience also enjoyed an inspirational presentation from UK national events coach Fayyaz ‘Fuzz’ Ahmed, one of the greatest high jump coaches of all time. His motivational speech on making a fresh start and reaching new goals resonated with the audience in this year of the London Olympic Games.
After the show, retailers gave their verdicts. Brian Humphrey from Wiveliscombe said he thought it was one of the better tradeshows he had attended, while Julian Holliss from Dartmouth described the day as “refreshingly positive.”
Mark Oliver from Sturminster Marshall said it was encouraging to see everyone more united and moving in one direction, while Stephen Jinks from Falmouth praised the layout of the show and quality of the presentations.
Justin Taylor from Winford added: “I thought the retailer-led enthusiasm of the presentations from Debbie and Mark were excellent and showed a strong understanding of what’s needed at store level.”
SPAR store owner Ravi Jhangiani, who runs stores in Tavistock and Plymouth, was the lucky winner of a Ford Fiesta in a prize draw for retailers held at the close of the show.
He said he planned to give the car to his daughter Ekta. “She was about to change her car for something smaller, and said only the other day that she wanted a Fiesta. I cannot believe that I have actually won one,” he said.
In separate draws, a free voucher to attend the Wessex Guild Convention in Cyprus in 2013 was won by Wendy Thomson, manager of the Gillett’s store in Sidford, while Clive Sheppard of Hazelgrove Services at Sparkford in Somerset won two days merchandising support in his forecourt store.
