Local Primary School Visit Store On The Isle Of Wight

A Ventnor convenience store opened its doors to children from the local primary school as part of a Government-backed initiative to encourage healthy eating.

Children from St. Francis School visited the SPAR store in Victoria Road to learn all about fruit and vegetables as part of the Department of Health’s Change4Life campaign to promote healthier lifestyles.

Part of the campaign, which was launched three years ago, is to encourage people to make sure they eat a healthy daily quota of five portions of fruit and vegetables. The Ventnor schoolchildren visited the store where staff were dressed in fruit and vegetable costumes and handed out fact sheets, quiz forms and goody bags.

Appleby Westward, SPAR’s regional distribution company in the South and West, provided a range of free fruit and vegetables on the day.

James Lowman, Chief Executive of the Association of Convenience Stores said: “Local shops are at the heart of communities, and the Change4Life’s help in improving the fruit and vegetables on offer in these stores can make a huge difference to the diet choices that people can make. The convenience sector is committed to Change4Life and promoting healthy choices.”

The Ventnor store is one of 14 SPAR stores on the Isle of Wight operated by the Hunnyhill Stores Group. The company opened its first store 12 years ago, and now employs 130 people on the island. Following the success in Ventnor, Hunnyhill is now hoping to organise a Change4Life event in the remainder of its stores.
