Mike Boardman - Managing Director

I am a great believer in the benefits of being part of the SPAR group and have always found that the strength of relationship we have with our trading partners is key to our success.

I have spent over 20 years in the food industry, including the last 5 years as Trading Director of fellow SPAR businesses Blakemore Trade Partners and Blakemore Retail and prior to that 10 years at Somerfield Stores.

Rob, a graduate of Portsmouth University. Prior to working for Countrywide Farmers, he held a number of financial and commercial positions with major companies including Motorola Inc and Wolseley plc.

Nick Kenworthy - Sales & Marketing Director

Nick Kenworthy joined Appleby Westward in 2000 and has had a number of roles within the Sales team, being appointed to Sales Director in 2003. Previously Nick worked for Somerfield and the Whitbread Group.

Nick is responsible for the recruitment and development of the Independent retailer estate within the Appleby Westward Group territory.

Jo Hounsell - Human Resources Director

Prior to joining Appleby Westward, Jo headed up the field HR team for RoadChef Motorways Limited where she worked for 8 years, and before that in a Retail HR role with Boots the Chemist.

Jo is a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Del Phillips - Logistics Director

Del joined the company 20 years ago as a temporary warehouse assembler. In 2001 he was appointed warehouse team leader, becoming warehouse manager ten years ago before becoming responsible for all logistics operations.

Jackie Waites - Head of Finance

Prior to joining Appleby Westward Jackie spend 2 ½ years gaining industry experience at Samworth Brothers Business Services Centre, and before that she was the Chief Accountant at West Devon Borough Council. Jackie qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2002.

Steve Thomas - Head of Sales

Steve joins Appleby Westward from Roadchef Motorways Ltd. where he was the Site Director for the recently-refurbished Sedgemoor Motorway Service Area on the M5, which includes a SPAR store. Steve, has worked for Roadchef for nearly 10 years, having previous extensive retail experience with Somerfield.

Robert Chapman-Brookes - Transport Manager

Rob joins Appleby with 36 years working in the road haulage industry, moulding him into a transport manager with a vision. Rob believes in equipping our fleet drivers to have all the skills necessary to meet the expectations of our customers, so our drivers become instrumental in the future development of your business. Long gone are the days of just turning up, unloading and disappearing. Developing these skills is not a five minute job, but ‘I love a good challenge’.

Donna Forward - Head of Trading Wholesale

Donna has worked for Appleby Westward since 1991, holding a number of different positions, including working for company owned stores in the late 1990s. Currently Donna is responsible for the Replenishment and Administration functions within Trading, ensuring we provide a good service level to our retailers.

Joanna Hunt - Head of Trading Retail

Joanna joined Appleby Westward in January as Head of Trading for ambient goods after working as an independent consultant on buying and project management for manufacturing and retail companies throughout Europe. She has worked across a wide range of food and non-food buying categories throughout her career, amassing 23 years’ experience working for a number of the country’s leading food retailers including Safeway, Somerfield and Tesco. She worked for Tesco’s UK commercial team and later in their overseas businesses, primarily in the Far East and Central Europe.

Andy Knight - Head of Store Development

Andy Knight started as a Merchandiser in 1987, and has held several different roles in the sales force before being appointed Head of Retail Development in 2010. For a period of time in the 90s Andy and his wife Debbie owned a SPAR store in Torquay. Andy is responsible for development within the Appleby Westward Group territory.

Nick Vivian - Head of Marketing & Customer Support

Nick Vivian joined Appleby Westward in August 2003. As head of Marketing Nick is responsible for SPAR and Appleby Westward’s marketing activity in the South West. This includes producing Point of Sale, creation of leaflets and advertising using various media throughout the South West. The majority of printed material is produced with our own resource Appleby Print Services which reports to Nick.

Mark Andrew - Head of I.T.

Mark joined Appleby Westward in 1998, having previously graduated at Middlesex University before returning to the South West and working for two large companies and a district council. Mark is responsible for the internal IT and Retail IT within the company, having become Head of IT in Jan 2010.

Tommie Quick - Head of Retail I.T.

Tommie has a wealth of experience within the I.T. industry having previously worked for large corporate companies such as Acer and Intel. After joining Appleby Westward in 2005 Tommie now heads up Retail I.T. Services developing, installing and maintaining the SPARPoS EPOS system within retail stores.

David Slade - Head of Store Recruitment

David Slade joined the company in 2003 as a Development Co-Ordinator and 7 years later he became a Regional Sales Manager, working with SPAR Retailers in the North Devon area. David moved across to recruitment as New Business Manager in March 2011 and has since been promoted to Head of Store Recruitment, in November 2013.

Bob Osborne - Print Manager

Bob Osborne joined Appleby Westward in October 2000 as Print Team Leader. Prior to that, Bob was Production Manager at Newscom Newspaper Group covering all aspects of print production, producing 35 weekly newspaper titles. Bob has worked within the print service since leaving school, initially serving a 5 year apprenticeship in commercial and bookwork print.

Liz Coad - PR & Events Co-ordinator

Liz joined Appleby Westward in May 2011 having previously worked at one of the company owned stores. After graduating from St Austell College with a BTEC Diploma in Business Administration, Liz moved into the retail sector where she worked as a duty manager before joining us as a member of the Food Service Team.

Having been involved in various in-store events, Liz is now responsible for implementing a PR strategy in the territory and co-ordinating events for Appleby Westward and SPAR in the local area.
